Sensational She-Hulk #1

Jennifer Walters

Jen was born to Elaine and Morris (the sheriff of Los Angeles County) Walters. She grew up playing with her cousin Bruce Banner, five years her elder. Unfortunately, as Bruce grew older and became involved in military and secret defense projects, the two grew apart.

Jennifer graduated from law school at UCLA and became a criminal defense attorney. While she was defending Lou Monkton, who had been framed by the crime boss Nicholas Trask, Dr. Banner paid her a visit. One of Trask's henchmen tried to kill Jen while she was driving her cousin around the city. Due the severity of the wounds from the attack, Bruce had to give her a blood transfusion using his own blood (the immediacy of the crisis coupled with Jen's rare blood type prevented Banner from rushing her to hospital himself). When an ambulance finally arrived, Bruce left to avoid angering himself into becoming the Hulk.

As Jen was recuperating in the hospital, more of Trask's men tried to kill her. In a surge of rage, she transformed into a jade-green, seven-foot-tall giant and took care of her would-be attackers. Unlike her cousin, however, she maintained her intellect after her transformation. She also could transform between her two selves at will and did not need an onrush of anger to become the She-Hulk.

After a few stints with the Avengers, the She-Hulk took the Thing's place in the Fantastic Four when Ben elected to stay on the Beyonder's Secret Wars planet. It was during this period that a radiation accident prevented her from ever returning to her normal form. However, since Jen had been spending so much time as the She-Hulk, she felt no real sense of loss. She remained with the Fantastic Four for some time after Ben had returned, but eventually went off on her own. She has since been an occasional member of the Avengers and still tries to maintain her legal practice.
