Black Panther #48

T'Challa

(known aliases include Black Leopard)

The Black Panther is the king of Wakanda in central Africa. Long before the nation became civilized, a meterorite made of vibranium crashed into the region. As mining techniques improved, the Wakandans extracted the sound-absorbing metal and sold it as a uniquely valuable resource. T'Challa's father, T'Chaka, then used the resources to conceal his kingdom from the outside world. Wakanda soon became enormously wealthy, as well as one of the most technologically advanced nations in the world.

When T'Challa was a boy, his country was visited by Ulysses Klaw, who was trying to learn the secrets of the vibranium mound. Klaw eventually turned on his hosts and killed T'Chaka, in the process becoming a creature of living sound himself. T'Challa, not yet old enough to become king, travelled the continent seeking revenge during which time he met and fell in love with Ororo Munroe. T'Challa eventually had to return to his country and claim his right to the throne; he soon attacked the Fantastic Four in an effort to prove his worthiness as a leader. The fight was an honorable one, and they soon became fast friends, especially in light of the team helping to defeat Klaw.

The Black Panther took a less xenophobic approach to ruling as his father, and became closely involved with many super-powered heroes in the United States, even going so far as to join the Avengers. Spending so much time abroad, however, led to repeated coup attempts, so T'Challa has spent more time recently in his home country. He's also recently reunited with Storm and the two married shortly before joining the FF.

It should be noted, too, that "Black Panther" is actually an honorary titled bestowed on the ruler of Wakanda. T'Challa is simply the latest in a long line of Black Panthers. The "costume" T'Challa wears is also ceremonial garb that accompanies the title, and is used in many diplomatic as well as adventurous pursuits.
