Memorabilia:
1977
- Pocket Books, a Simon and Schuster Division of Gulf and Western Corporation,
produced "Stan Lee Presents the Fantastic Four." It reprints issues #1 - 6 with a prologue and
epilogue by Stan Lee. It was printed under their Marvel Comics Series line.
- The Spider-Man Game with the Fantastic Four was released by Milton-Bradley.
According to the ads, "Now you can join Spidey and the Fantastic Four as they battle
their most fearsome foes and race to the center of the web!"
- Promoted within the Marvel comics themselves were a series of four jigsaw puzzles
by Whitman Publishers. One of them used artwork of the Fantastic Four by Don Heck and Gary Brodsky.
- Small plastic cups (used for Slurpees) were distributed at 7-11 stores
with a Marvel Superheroes promotion. One of the cups had the Fantastic Four on it.
It looks like John Buscema's artwork, but no credit is given on the cup itself.
Other cups included Medusa and Power Man.
I believe part of the same promotion used different artwork on glass drinking glasses.
Again, no art credit is given but I have included pictures of it to the right.
- A 96 page paperback (The Mighty Marvel Superheroes' Cookbook) from Simon and
Schuster collects recipes from various Marvel super heroes. Illustrations are on
every page, featuring (I believe) artwork clipped from the comics.
I can't verify that the FF
appear in it, but I know it does contain Hulk,
Spider-Man and Captain America.
- A Human Torch
patch was issued. It was poorly printed, like many similar patches of the time.
- "The Fantastic Four Meet The Witch" coloring book was released by Whitman Publishers.
(The original retail price was 39 cents.) Like most coloring books, the writing and art
is far below comic book quality. The story, however, is not simply an adaptation of
a comic book, but rather a generic witch story with the FF
dropped in.
- Whitman UK released a Fantastic Four 180-piece jigsaw puzzle. It featured
original Kirby-style artwork (although I doubt it was done by Kirby himself)
and measured 15 and 11.25 inches.
- Marvel
also published a series of "Fun Books." They all measured 8 x 11 inches.
The first one was 352 pages, and the following two were 128 pages each. Several of the
games and puzzles feature members of the FF.
- Fleetwood produced a Fantastic Four Wrist Signal Sender.
It appears to be a simple spring loading mechanism that projects the accompanying plastic
disks. Presumably, the only signals one was intended to send were stop (red) and go (green).
- Also published in concert with the Fun Books were several 64 page activity books.
Among the titles were "Marvel's Clobberin' Time," "Spidey's Wall-Crawler Wordwebs",
and "Mighty Marvel Mazes." Again members of the FF are featured throughout the books.
